Üniversite dersleriyle geçen bir haftayı daha bitirmiş eve doğru gidiyorum. Beyoğlu’nda, her daim kalabalık İstiklal Caddesi’ndeki yürüyüş parkurumda ilerlerken değişik insanlara rastlıyorum. Sol tarafta, Odakule’nin tam karşısında, yaşlıca bir adam ateşte pişmiş kestane satıyor. Bir porsiyonu, 1 TL. Daha önce hiç yememiştim ve maalesef satıcı adamın yaygarası nedeniyle de öylece bırakıyorum onları. 20 metre kadar ileride ise genç bir adam saat satıyor. Gerçek olup olmadıklarını merak ediyorum doğrusu. En yeni Swatch’un bugüne özel fiyatı 20 lira... Önceki üç hafta boyunca İstanbul’da hava sıcaklığı oldukça düşüktü, ama dünkü hava tahminleri termometrenin 17°C’ye kadar yükseleceğini söylüyordu. Güneşli günler gelecekmiş. Çokça güneş!
Eve döndüğümde Erasmus programıyla Avrupa’nın her bir köşesinden gelmiş arkadaşlarımı haftasonu için kimi planlar üzerinde tartışırken buldum. Ben de onlara katıldım. Sultan Ahmet’e gidip Topkapı Sarayı’nı görebiliriz. Sonra da Sultan Ahmet Camisi’ne gidebilirdik. Ardından Tophane’de nargile içer, tavla (“backgammon” olarak da bilinir) oynardık. Diğerleri ise Kadıköy’e tekne gezisi yapmayı düşünüyorlardı. Boğaz’dan İstanbul manzarasının keyfini çıkarmak. Turistik kimi yerleri gezmek. Sonunda Prens Adaları’ndan olan Büyükada’ya gidip piknik yapmaya karar verdik.
Perşembeleri arkadaşlarımla birlikte Eminönü yakınlarındaki Ermenilerce kurulan pazara gideriz hep. Haftanın alışverişi: 1 kg çilek 2,50 lira; 1 kg portakal 1 lira; 1 kg domates 75 kuruş. İşte, İstanbul’u sevmek için üç neden! İstanbul’da yaşamak yalnızca ucuz değil aynı zamanda sağlıklı bir yaşam da sunuyor. İstanbul’u sevmenin diğer bir nedeni de Palamut Balığı: bir balık 1,50 lira! Bu kentte en pahalı şeyler elektronik eşya ile alkollü içkilermiş gibi geliyor bana.
Tabii ki, Beyoğlu’ndaki pekçok kulüpten birine gitmemişseniz haftasonunuz tamamlanmış olamaz. İstanbul’un bu en modern semti asla uyku yüzü görmez. Haftanın yedi günü, günün 24 saati çevrede müzik ve insanlara rastlayabilirsiniz. Peyote’de metal rock ve house müzik dinlenebilir. Babylon ise programının çeşitliliğiyle biliniyor; cazdan techno’ya, deneyselden, oryantal ve rock’a. En sıkı drum ‘n bass’ı ise Pixies’de bulabilirsiniz.
Haftasonu keyfi, pazar günü de devam eder. İstanbul’un değerli hazinelerinden daha fazlasını görme vaktidir. Kentin Bizans dönemi olarak da bilinen Eski Yunan zamanında başlayan zengin bir tarihi var. Bizans medeniyetine ait pek çok tarihsel ize, İstanbul’un merkezini asırlık Galata semtine bağlayan Altın Boynuz’da rastlayabilirsiniz. Altın Boynuz (Haliç), Constantinople kurulduktan sonra Bizanslılar’ın ilk doğal limanı olmuş.
Bir zamanlar gözetleme kulesi olarak kullanılan Galata Kulesi, Galata semtinin merkezindedir ve size kentin büyükçe bir kısmını görme olanağı sunar.
Efsanevi Ceneviz Cumhuriyeti tarafından kurulmuş Galata, Beyoğlu’nun hemen bitişiğindedir. Burada müzik aletleri, hediyelik eşya, halı ve tabii ki yiyecek satan pek çok küçük dükkan var. Çokça yemek! Kebap, lahmacun, börek, baklava, pilav, balık ve diğer pek çok geleneksel yiyecek. Pazar gününü bu bölgede geçirmek hoştur.
Galata Kulesi’nin yakınlarında birçok tarihi mekan da var. Ceneviz tarihine ait izler burada oldukça iyi korunmuş. İtalyan katolik kilisesi St. Antuan da, bu bölgedeki en eski yapılardan. Görülmeyi kesinlikle hak ediyor! Galata bölgesinin diğer bir gözde yeri ise, Altın Boynuz’u Galata’ya bağlayan Galata Köprüsü’dür. Köprünün üzerinde sayısız olta balıkçısı görürsünüz. Köprünün altında ise, pek çok kaliteli balık restoranı var. Ancak köprünün en güzel özelliği, Eminönü, Üsküdür, Karaköy ve Sultan Ahmet gibi Boğaz’ın önemli bir kısmını gözlerönüne sermesidir.
Haftasonu başlıyor. Pek çok seçenek var. İstanbul her ilgi alanına yönelik mekanlarıyla koca bir kent. Sosyal hayatı, tarihi, mimari, yemeği ve dışarı çıkmayı seven biri için yapacak çok şey var burada. Bir şey var ki kesinlikle çok doğru: İstanbul’da Erasmus hayatı, sadece okula gitmek demek değildir. Hayat demek! Güzel yerler gezmek. Pek çok yeni insanla tanışmak. Eğlenmek. Hayatı maksimumda yaşamak! Bırakalım da haftasonu başlasın…

What to do when you´re studyıng in İstanbul?

After I finished another collegeweek I’m heading home. While I`m taking a walking tour through the everlasting crowdy Istiklat street in Beyoğlu I encounter some various persons. On the left side, right across Odakule, an elder man sells smoked chestnuts. One lira, one portion. I never ate them before and unfortunately for the shouting sellsman I`d rather keep it like that. Aproximately 20 meters further on I mention a younger guy selling watches. I`m wondering if they are real. Today`s special price 20 lira for the newest Swatch... The temperature in İstanbul was quite low in the previous three weeks, but the forecast of yesterday told me that the quicksilver will rise till 17°C. And there will be sun. Lots of sun!
Back at home my fellow Erasmus students from all over Europe are discussing some of the plans for this weekend. I join them. We can go to the Sultan Ahmet area to watch the Topkapı Palace from the inside. Maybe we can also visit the Blue Mosque next. Followed by an evening at Tophane to smoke nargile and play tavla, also known as backgammon. Others are thinking about a boattrip to Kadıköy. Enjoying Istanbul’s sight from the Bosphorus. Doing some sight-seeing. Afterwards we decided to go out for a picknick at Büyükada, one of the Princess Islands.
During the Thursdays me and my friends always visit the Armenian vegetable Market, nearby Eminönü. The catch of the week: 1 kg strawberries: 2,50 lira, 1 kg oranges: 1 lira, 1 kg tomatoes: 75 kuruş. Et voilá: Three reasons to love Istanbul. Life in Istanbul is not only cheap but also very healthy. Another reason to love Istanbul is the Palamut Balik: 1,50 lira per fish! It seems like the only expensive goods in Istanbul are electronics and alcohol.
Ofcourse, a weekend isn’t complete without going out in one of the many clubs in Beyoğlu. The most modern part of Istanbul which is never asleep. You can find music and people all around 24 hours per day, seven days per week. In Peyote, you can find metal rock and house music. Babylon is known for his eclectic programme, varying from jazz, techno, experimental, oriental and rock. The most heavy drum ‘n bass is played you can find in Pixies.
On Sunday the weekend continues. Time to see more of Istanbul’s valuable treasures. The city has a rich history that starts in the time of the old Greeks, also known as the era of the Byzantines. You can find lots of historical traces about the Byzantine civilization at the Golden Horn, the district that connects the centre of Istanbul in the southwest with the epochal Galata area. The Golden Horn is the first natural harbor of the Byzantines after the establishment of Constantinople.
The Galata Kulesi, the guard tower in the centre of the Galata area, offers you the possibility to overview a big part of the city. Galata, established by the legendary Republic of Genoa, is located next to Beyoğlu. You can find here lots of small shops, selling music instruments, water pipes, Turkish decorations, carpets and of course food, lots of food! Like kebab, lahmacun, börek, baklava, pilav, balik and lots of other traditional dishes. It’s nice to spend the Sunday in this area.
Next to the Galata Kulesi there are also many other historical places that can be find in Galata. For example, lots of traces of the Genoa history are conserved quite well. The st. Antuan Kilisesi, is an Italian Catholic church and one of the oldest buildings in the area. It´s absolutely worth the visit. Another hotspot of the Galata area can be found on the Galata Köprüsü, the large bridge that connects the Golden Horn with Galata. On the bridge lots of fishermen are at work. There are also lots of good fish restaurants below the bridge. But the most beautiful aspect of the bridge is the view over several big parts along the Bosphorus like Eminönü, Üsküdar, Karaköy and Sultan Ahmet.
The weekend begins. And there are too much options. Istanbul is a enormous city with places for every kinds of interests. For the ones who like social life, history, architecture, culinar experiments and going out, there are much occasions to visit. One thing is definitely for sure: Erasmus life in Istanbul is not only about studying. It’s about experience. Visiting beautiful places. Meeting lots of new people. Having lots of fun. Live life to the max! Let the weekend begin...
